If you have ever thought about a real estate career, maybe selling homes to families or warehouse space for an expanding business, you are probably aware that it is not a job that you can just walk into off the street. While becoming an agent does not require the years of schooling that many other professions call for, real estate agents are still required to complete a standardized educational process in order to practice. This is because so many people depend on the market running in a smooth uniform manner; and because for many people real estate transactions are the most important in their lives. Because of the centrality of the process, governments at many different levels require training in order for an individual to fully qualify as a real estate agent.

As you might already have inferred from the introduction, many of our articles will discuss the process of initial training within the real estate business. This training is different from one province to the next, as there are different laws about real estate transactions and representatives depending if one is looking at selling residential or commercial real estate. (In fact, territories may not have licensed agents at all while other provinces require only minimal training.) So, if you're relocating, you may want to look into the guidelines for the area before jumping in. We will take a look at what you will need at the entry level in order to obtain a real estate license.
We will also be taking a look at what different jurisdictions call for, in terms of ongoing training for real estate agents within their area. Again, this is known to differ from one province to another. Many real estate agents across Canada are required to engage in additional training courses on a regular basis, as much as twice a year in some places. If you're moving from mortgages on commercial properties to selling residential homes, there are steps that need to be taken. These training sessions familiarize agents with various aspect of the business, new laws that directly impact transactions of real estate, and so on. Most agents find them beneficial in that they directly impact the quality and breadth of services they can offer to clients, increasing their own personal value.
Finally, we will take a look at training courses in real estate that are optional rather than mandatory in order to practice as an agent. Why are these types of courses helpful? Well, as with ongoing required training they can really give an agent the edge within a competitive marketplace. Just look at the amount of competitors selling real estate online! Voluntary training means expanding a knowledge base and allowing potential clients to know you have done so; the result is an increased ability to perform your job and to market your personal brand.
As is true with so many jobs, real estate training does not end just because an individual has completed the basic training required. All agents can use the exposure to market conditions and strategies that ongoing training can provide. Moreover, additional training greatly increases the marketability of the individual agent in the eyes of potential customers.
